Definition

What is DTG printing?

Direct digital printing, known as DTG printing (Direct to Garment), works like an inkjet printer, but on fabric. The design is printed straight onto the garment in four-colour process: cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

By mixing these 4 colours, the printer reproduces every shade in your file. The ink soaks into the fibre: the result is sharp, with no texture you can feel.

Who is it for?

Textile printing for small runs and one-off pieces

No screens to prepare: digital printing is cost-effective from the very first item. It is the ideal choice for custom t-shirts in small quantities, photo gifts, collections by designers and artists, or designs too colourful for screen printing.

Ideal for

T-shirt, hoodie and tote bag printing

Digital printing gives its best results on light-coloured fabrics with at least 50% cotton. These are the items we print most often:

Good to know: for dark or synthetic fabrics (polyester), we will recommend DTF transfers or sublimation instead, which give better results on these materials.

Your project

How does digital printing work?

  1. Your requestSend us your design, the items you need and the quantities.
  2. PreparationWe check the quality of your file and send you a proof to approve.
  3. PrintingYour design is printed straight onto the fabric in one pass, whatever the number of colours.
  4. Curing and deliveryThe ink is heat-cured, then your items are checked and delivered or ready for collection.
The budget

Digital printing prices: what affects the cost

With digital printing, the number of colours does not change the price. These are the factors that count:

FactorEffect on price
Design sizeThe main factor: the larger the printed area, the more ink and time it takes.
Number of positionsEach printed position (chest, back, sleeve…) is priced separately.
QuantityNo screen costs: the price per item stays stable, even for a single piece.
Chosen itemThe price of the garment or bag is added, depending on the model and brand.

Tip: beyond a few dozen items with a simple design (1 to 3 colours), screen printing often becomes cheaper. We will recommend the technique that best suits your budget.

Photo t-shirt printing

Family photo, pet portrait, watercolour illustration, colour gradient… Digital printing faithfully reproduces every shade of your picture, where screen printing would be limited in colours.

It is the ideal technique for a custom photo t-shirt, a personalised gift or an artistic creation.

Your files

Which file to send for digital printing?

A high-resolution PNG, PDF or JPG (ideally 300 dpi at print size). The design is printed as supplied: the sharper your file, the sharper the print. For clean edges, use a PNG with a transparent background.

FAQ

Everything about digital textile printing

What is digital textile printing?

Digital textile printing (or DTG printing) prints a design straight onto the garment, like an inkjet printer. It uses the 4 process colours to reproduce every shade, including photos and gradients.

What does DTG mean?

DTG stands for "Direct to Garment": the design is printed directly onto the piece of clothing, with no transfer or screen.

Can you print a single t-shirt?

Yes. With no screens or costly preparation, digital printing is cost-effective from a single item. It is the ideal technique for a gift or a prototype.

How much does digital printing cost?

The price mainly depends on the design size, the number of positions and the chosen item. The number of colours makes no difference. Ask us for a quote: it is tailored to your project.

Which fabrics can be digitally printed?

Fabrics with at least 50% cotton, preferably light-coloured: t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags. For polyester or dark fabrics, DTF transfers or sublimation are better suited.

DTG vs DTF: what is the difference?

With DTG, the ink is printed directly into the fabric: no texture. With DTF, the design is printed on a film, then heat-applied to the fabric: it works on almost all materials and colours, with a thin film you can feel.

Is digital printing washable?

Yes, with a little care: wash the garment inside out at 30 °C, avoid the tumble dryer and iron inside out. It is slightly less durable than screen printing in the long run.

Which file should I send for digital printing?

A high-resolution PNG, PDF or JPG, ideally 300 dpi at print size. The design is printed as supplied: a sharp file means a sharp print.

How long does a digital printing order take?

Allow 5 to 10 working days after approval of your proof, depending on the quantity. If you need your items by a specific date, please mention it in your quote request.
